🌍 Happy International Wheelchair Day! 🧑🦽
Today, we honour the groundbreaking designs that shaped mobility and independence throughout history. From early self-propelled chairs to modern powered wheelchairs.
🔹 Stephan Farfler’s Self-Propelled Wheelchair – In 1655, paraplegic clockmaker Stephan Farfler built one of the first self-propelled wheeled chairs with a three-wheel chassis and hand cranks, enabling greater autonomy for users. (Image Source: Wikimedia Commons)
🔹 Merlin’s Mechanical Chair – In the 18th century John Joseph Merlin’s cranked, geared wheelchair became so influential that these devices were called “Merlin chairs” for nearly a century, popular in medical catalogues for those with limited mobility. (Image Source: Wellcome Collection)
🔹 Hand-Cranked Chain-Driven Wheelchair (by Richards) – Early 20th-century wheelchairs like this UK-made hand-crank model used chain drive and dual hand cranks, continuing the tradition of user-propelled designs. (Image Source: Science Museum Group Collection)
🔹 ‘Model 8’ Folding Wheelchair – Based on the Everest & Jennings X-frame, the Model 8 made wheelchairs lighter, foldable, and more widely available, becoming a staple in UK hospitals and care homes in the 1950s-60s. (Image Source: Science Museum Group Collection)
🔹 Klein’s Prototype Electric Wheelchair – Mid-20th century engineer George Klein collaborated with disability advocates to develop one of the first electric wheelchairs, giving users with limited upper-body mobility a new level of independence. (Image Source: National Research Council of Canada)
🔹 Turbo Mark VI Powered Wheelchair – In the 1980s Dan Everard created the Turbo Mark VI, a powered chair designed specifically for children’s mobility, allowing toddlers with disability to explore their world with freedom. (Image Source: Science Museum Group Collection)
🔹 The Shadow Racer – In the 1990s, veteran Jim Martinson designed the Shadow Racer — a lightweight sports wheelchair that helped propel adaptive athletics forward with faster, agile frames for track and road racing. (Image Source: Science Museum Group Collection)

A huge congratulations to our Active Manual Product Specialist, @scook170 ! Shaun has just taken third place at the 10km Paracanoe World Championships in Hungary. It was an intense race due to the heat and level of competition. Shaun held strong, battling Spain in the last 5km, holding them off with a final 500m sprint. Such a well-deserved result, especially considering all the long hours of training put in. We cannot wait for next year to see what you will continue to accomplish 💚 ... See MoreSee Less
