Almost as important as the assessment is the wheelchair handover process. After a product has been received and setup for the client, we will ensure that during our handover, the client becomes familiar with the new equipment and is comfortable by making any necessary adjustments.
We will discuss and observe transfers in and out of the wheelchair, and provide guidance on achieving optimum positioning via the chosen transfer method.
If applicable, we will check that the client is comfortable with their transport method such as; WAV, public transport, or taxi.
Access in and around the home will have been examined during the assessment, however this will be revisited using their own equipment. We will observe driving the wheelchair around the home environment, and provide instruction if there are any areas of difficulty.
We will always make sure that our clients are happy and comfortable with their new product by the end of the handover process.
Review
Naturally with any new equipment there will be a settling in phase, the body will take time to adjust to the new postural support or seating set up and this could happen over a period of several months.
Therefore, at CMS as part of our commitment to our client, we schedule a 3 month review of the equipment so we can alter and revisit adjustments if needed. This will also include changes to the driving characteristics of the wheelchair, as the client’s confidence and requirements may have evolved over the initial 3 months.
Training
If at any point the client is lacking confidence in driving the wheelchair or in how the wheelchair will react in certain environments and situations, CMS are able to provide situational or location specific training to assist.
